North Dakota legislators, school administrators, teachers, and other leaders have made a serious effort to promote the teaching of civics and citizenship education in the schools of the state at all grade levels.
Model Programs for North Dakota
The 2005 and 2007 North Dakota Legislative Assemblies have authorized and funded a number of important projects that support and promote citizenship education statewide.
The legislature has appropriated funds to the North Dakota Center for Distance Education “for the purpose of revitalizing civic education” in North Dakota schools.
North Dakota’s 2007 content and achievement standards for social studies promote the teaching of civics and citizenship education to the students of the state.
- Grades 4 and 8: Students understand the historical impact of political institutions and the role of the citizen in government and society.
- Grade 9-12: Students understand the development, functions, and forms of various political systems and the role of the citizen in government and society.
