Though the Lens: Early Years of Aviation in North Dakota
From Air Force jets to hot air balloons, television and modern aviation went together hand-in-hand in the 1950s. North Dakota’s two new Air Force bases reflected an increased federal role, spending $100 million on developing each base and bringing in 10,000 new residents. The bases spurred interest in flying and led several colleges around the state to offer degrees focusing on airplanes and, yes, rocket science, while commercial and recreational aviation also grew.
