The U.S. and Canada agree on the 49th parallel as the international boundary and for the first time the Red River Valley is divided.  Red River cart fur trading routes to St. Paul are established. John Tanner is finally reunited with his family, having trouble re-assimilating into white culture, and tells his story in an autobiography.
