    4. View the video clip about the trumpet
    5. Show a French horn and how the pitch changes by pressing the valves
    6. View the video clip about the French horn

    Learning Activities

    MATERIALS:
  • Disinfectant wipes

  • Let the students hold the instrument and get the feel of how they can push the valves and slide the trombone slide to feel how it works. They will want to blow the instrument so you must have a disinfectant on hand to clean the mouthpiece between students.

    Culminating Activity

    1. Try to get one student to play an easy note. Trumpet can play the note C. The note C is fingered with no keys pressed.
    2. Try to get one student to play an easy note. French Horn can play the note F. The note F is fingered by pressing the first key with the index finger.
    3. Try to get one student to play an easy note. Trombone can play Bb. The note Bb is in the first position by pulling the slide all to way to the top.
    4. Now try to get all three students to play the three instruments at the same time. If all students are playing the correct note, the instruments’ note should all sound the same.

    Cross-Curricular Activity

    1. Try trumpet and trombone together. The sound of these two instruments together represent the high and middle sounds of the band.
    2. Now try French horn and trumpet. The sound of these two instruments together represent the high sounds of the band.
    3. Now try trombone and French horn together. The sound of these two instruments together represent the low and middle sounds of the band.
    4. When these instruments are played together this will be three parts of a chord; bass, tenor and alto voicing.

    Community Connections

Assignments for students would be to have them attend a local concert either by the community or their own school band concert and listen for each instrument and be aware of their part of the band.
