Frithjof Holmboe was a Norwegian immigrant who started a photography shop in Bismarck, North Dakota, in 1909. In 1913 he became interested in motion pictures and bought himself a crank-style video camera. He hoped that eventually he could make money creating motion pictures as an extension of his photography business.  He went on to make several silent films for hire in North Dakota before moving to California in 1921.
In the 1970s, the deteriorating nitrate originals of Holmboe’s films were restored to the extent possible. They provide a rare historical visual look at North Dakota at the turn of the 20th century.
