Nokota Horse, honorary equine of North Dakota

In 1993, the Legislative Assembly named the Nokota horse as the honorary equine, or horse, of North Dakota. Nokota horses are believed to be descendants of Chief Sitting Bull’s war ponies. Only a few of these horses are left, and the Nokota Horse Conservancy organization works to save the Nokota horse from extinction.
